At Genius Hub our vision is to save money for our customers while saving energy for the world. Therefore, we believe it is our responsibility to care for the environment and to take all the relevant measures to reduce our carbon footprint.

Genius Hub was founded by Alasdair and Simon, two Birmingham entrepreneurs. Alasdair was working as an energy efficiency consultant, helping people find ways to cut their carbon footprint and energy bills. Simon was an electronics’ whizz, experimenting with ways to automate his home. Together they realised that there was a massive opportunity to save energy: better heating controls.

With that in mind they have designed a product that not only helps the consumers to control their heating from a phone and allows them to come back to a comfortable house, but also Genius Hub reduces the level of energy usage and therefore the carbon footprint.

Because of the advanced features of our system, our customers are able to use Genius Hub in different modes which reduce the energy usage while still providing a high level of comfort.

With the Footprint mode the Genius Hub system learns when a room is used and uses this to predict when to next heat the room. This also works on a 7-day schedule, so it will heat those days when people are at work differently to those they spend in front of the TV. By predicting when the room is used, Genius Hub will call on the boiler and open the radiator valves to heat the room up for when a person normally start to use it. If the customer no longer normally uses the room, the heating will shut off in this room, saving them energy.

There are 3 settings in Footprint so that it works the way people want. The first is Super-Eco and it means the heating will only come on in a room if it is currently being used but this saves the most energy. The Genius Hub will be reactive and will not bring the heating on before the user gets home. The second is Eco which is the standard Footprint setting, which learns when somebody uses the rooms and heat these up at expected times so the room is warm for when it is used.

The third setting is Comfort and this is where Genius Hub will learn when somebody uses the rooms and if there are short periods of time when there is nobody in the room, the heating will stay on until it is sure that the room is no longer in use. However, this saves the least amount of energy but will be the most comfortable.

But there are other things that we do at Genius Hub to demonstrate our love for the environment. Here are a few of them:

• Encourage our employees to use alternative transport in order to get to work, such as public transport or cycling;
• We recycle all our paper, plastic and glass;
• We use the Genius Hub system in our offices as well so we only have the heating on when it’s needed and only if there is occupancy in the offices;
• Minimise waste through careful and efficient use of all materials and energy;
• Reduce risks from environmental, health or safety hazards for employees and others in the vicinity of our operations;
• Purchase sustainable products wherever feasible (e.g. recycled, low environmental impact products and energy from renewable sources);
• Continually assess the environmental impact of all our operations;
• Train employees in good environmental practice and encourage employee involvement in environmental action.
